Goods imported to Italy included wine and olive oil from Spain, Gaul and North Africa; grain, which Rome obtained in taxes from Egypt and North Africa; and marble from Greece and Asia Minor, which was used for buildings and monuments. The Arch of Titus in Rome was faced with marble from Athens. Cargoes were commonly carried in amphorae (jars) containing wine, grapes, olive oil or fish sauce, stacked several layers deep inside a ship's hull.
